Screw Thread Design Screw Thread Fundamentals A screw thread is defined as a ridge of uniform section in the form of a helix on either the external or internal surface of a cylinder. Internal threads refer to those on nuts and tapped holes, while external threads are those on bolts, studs, or screws. A screw thread, often shortened to thread, is a helical structure used to convert between rotational and linear movement or force. A screw thread is an inclined plane wrapped around a cylinder or cone in the form of a helix, with the former being called a straight thread and the latter called a tapered thread. More screw threads are produced each year than any other machine element.

  (ii) Screw Thread Micrometer: The screw thread micrometer is designed to measure the pitch diameter of screw threads up to mm of accuracy. It is similar to an outside micrometer but has following the differences: (i) The movable spindle is pointed, and (ii) The end of the anvil is the same as the screws thread to be measured.
